PowerX Cube Supports First Summer Strawberry Harvest and Carbon-Zero Agriculture at JAL FARM

TOKYO, JAPAN --- PowerX, Inc. (Head Office: Shinagawa City, Tokyo; President & Group CEO: Mitsuko Tottori; hereinafter “JAL”) and JAL Agriport Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Narita City, Chiba Prefecture; President: Yusuke Yabumoto; hereinafter “JAGRI”), has successfully completed the first summer strawberry harvest since the “PowerX Cube” battery energy storage system (BESS) began operating at “JAL FARM,” as part of the carbon-zero agriculture pilot project conducted by the three companies. By combining solar power generation with the PowerX Cube, approximately 60% of the farm's electricity use during the summer months---when air-conditioning demand rises---was covered by renewable energy.
■ Results of the Pilot Project
1. First Summer Strawberry Harvest Since the BESS Began Operation
2026 marked the first summer under the power system combining solar generation and the PowerX Cube. In this pilot, JAGRI cultivates “Yotsuboshi,” a strawberry variety developed by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), which has a partnership agreement with JAL, and harvesting has progressed steadily since June. The harvested summer strawberries are sold at supermarkets in the Narita area and patisseries across the greater Kanto region.
2. Approximately 60% of Electricity Use Converted to Renewables,
Cutting Power Costs and CO2 Emissions
By combining direct power supply from solar generation with charge/discharge control by the PowerX Cube (storing surplus electricity and discharging during peak demand hours), approximately 60% of the farm's electricity use was covered by renewable energy during June and July 2026, when air-conditioning demand rises.
As a result, electricity purchased from the grid in July was reduced by approximately 11,500 kWh. This corresponds to a reduction of approximately JPY 280,000 in monthly electricity costs* and approximately 4.9 tonnes of CO2 emissions**---equivalent to the annual emissions of two average passenger cars.

■ Background
Strawberries are typically produced from winter through spring, so supply declines and unit prices rise in summer. Year-round cultivation that enables shipments during the low-supply summer season would improve the profitability of farm operations. At the same time, with summer temperatures rising in recent years, air conditioning is essential to keep greenhouse temperature and humidity suitable for strawberry growth, and the resulting electricity costs and CO2 emissions have been a challenge. This pilot aims to achieve both higher profitability and lower environmental impact by covering the electricity needed for air conditioning with renewable energy from battery storage and solar power.
PowerX, JAL, and JAGRI announced a strategic partnership on environmental business in April 2025 and have been conducting the summer strawberry pilot at JAL FARM since July of that year. The PowerX Cube commenced operation in December 2025, and the system now stores solar-generated electricity for use in greenhouse air conditioning and other applications, remotely monitored via PowerX's energy management system “PowerOS.” Through this initiative, the three companies are working to realize “carbon-zero agriculture” that maintains conditions suited to strawberry growth even in summer while limiting environmental impact.

■ Future Plans
The three companies will continue to optimize BESS control and further raise the self-consumption rate of solar power. Building on the demand fluctuations unique to protected horticulture observed in this pilot, they will also develop new battery utilization models aligned with seasonal patterns, such as operating battery resources as balancing capacity in electricity markets.
Adapting to climate change and rising energy costs are challenges shared across agriculture, not limited to strawberries. Drawing on the insights gained through this pilot, the three companies will work to establish business models for the agricultural sector that combine higher profitability with lower environmental impact, including expanding the carbon-zero agriculture model to other regions.
■ About the Mid-Size Industrial BESS “PowerX Cube”
The PowerX Cube deployed in this pilot is a mid-size industrial BESS developed in-house by PowerX and manufactured in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture. Its storage capacity of 358 kWh (nominal) is equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of approximately 30 average Japanese households. In addition to peak shaving at commercial facilities and factories and self-consumption of on-site solar power, it can serve as a backup power source for BCP (business continuity planning) in emergencies. In this pilot, it stores surplus solar power and discharges it during hours of high air-conditioning demand, supporting the farm's use of renewable energy and reducing grid electricity purchases.
