Two Microgrid Projects Featuring PowerX's BESS Commence Operations

2026.04.24

TOKYO, JAPAN — PowerX, Inc. (Head Office: Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture; Director, President and CEO: Masahiro Ito; Securities Code: 485A) announced that two microgrid projects featuring its battery energy storage systems (BESS) commenced operations this spring.

Each project combines solar power generation with BESS to utilize renewable energy under normal conditions while enabling independent power supply during disasters. Both projects have been selected to receive subsidies from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under the “Subsidy Program for Distributed Energy Resource Deployment to Promote the Expansion of Renewable Energy (Regional Independent Grid Development in Anticipation of Power Distribution Business Entry).”

PowerX, a leader in domestic BESS manufacturing, will continue to contribute to improving Japan’s energy self-sufficiency and strengthening regional resilience through the supply of products for distributed energy projects, including microgrids.

Details of each project are as follows.

1. Kanegasaki Resilience Grid (Kanegasaki Town, Iwate Prefecture)

This microgrid integrates solar power generation and BESS at Toyota Motor East Japan’s Iwate Plant to utilize renewable energy in plant operations. In the event of a disaster, the system works in conjunction with existing gas engine generators to supply electricity for three or more days to designated emergency facilities, evacuation shelters, and a school lunch center located outside the factory grounds.

  • Project Operators: Toyota Motor East Japan, Inc.; Kanegasaki Town

  • System Selected: 1 unit of “Mega Power 2700A” large-scale BESS (Storage Capacity: 2,742 kWh)

  • Subsidy Program: FY 2024 and FY 2025 “Subsidy Program for Distributed Energy Resource Deployment to Promote the Expansion of Renewable Energy (Regional Independent Grid Development in Anticipation of Power Distribution Business Entry)”

  • Operations Commenced: April 1, 2026

2. Hinode Regional Energy Supply Project (Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture)

A community-based energy supply initiative led by Suzuyo Shoji Co., Ltd. in the Shimizu Port and Hinode area. Solar panels installed on the rooftops of logistics facilities in the area are combined with BESS and an energy management system (EMS), enabling local generation and consumption of renewable energy. During prolonged power outages caused by typhoons or other events, the system functions as a microgrid, providing independent power supply to the area.

  • Project Operator: Suzuyo Shoji Co., Ltd.

  • System Selected: 2 units of “Mega Power 2700A” large-scale BESS (Total Capacity: 5,484 kWh)

  • Subsidy Programs: FY 2024 “Subsidy Program for Distributed Energy Resource Deployment to Promote the Expansion of Renewable Energy (Regional Independent Grid Development in Anticipation of Power Distribution Business Entry)” and FY 2025 “Subsidy Program for Renewable Energy Expansion and Distributed Energy Resource Deployment (Regional Independent Grid Development in Anticipation of Power Distribution Business Entry)”

  • Operations Commenced: March 24, 2026
