PowerX, Inc. (Head Office: Minato City, Tokyo, Japan; Director, President & CEO: Masahiro Ito) announced that its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been selected for the “Offshore Floating Data Center” demonstration, scheduled to commence around autumn 2025. The project is a collaborative initiative involving the City of Yokohama, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, NTT FACILITIES, INC., Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, and MUFG Bank, Ltd., with the aim of operating the facility entirely on renewable energy.
For the demonstration, a container-type data center, solar-power generation equipment, and the BESS will be installed on an existing mini-float (floating mooring facility) at Osanbashi Pier in Yokohama. The five project partners will verify stable off-grid operation using only renewable energy in a maritime environment. PowerX will manufacture the BESS at its Power Base factory in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, and supply it for this project.
Building on the results of the demonstration, the five participating parties aim to commercialize the world’s first “offshore floating green data center.” This initiative also marks the first deployment of a PowerX BESS in a data-center application.
