Toyota Motor East Japan Selects PowerX's Battery Energy Storage Systems to Enhance Resilience in Kanegasaki Microgrid Project
2025.02.14

TOKYO, JAPAN ― PowerX, Inc. (Head Office: Minato City, Tokyo, Japan; Director, President & CEO: Masahiro Ito, hereafter "PowerX") announces that its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), "Mega Power," has been selected for the "Kanegasaki Resilience Grid," a microgrid project driven by Toyota Motor East Japan, Inc. (Headquarters: Ohira Village, Miyagi; President: Hiroyuki Ishikawa; hereafter "TMEJ") and Kanegasaki Town, a local municipality in Iwate Prefecture.
As part of this initiative, TMEJ's Iwate Plant will install PowerX’s BESS alongside solar power generation facilities and an energy management system, with operations as a community microgrid planned to commence in fiscal year 2026. The BESS will primarily support peak shaving for the plant’s electricity consumption, facilitate electricity purchase time-shifting, and optimize surplus solar energy utilization. This effort will contribute to increasing renewable energy use and reducing environmental impact at the plant, a key compact-car production site for the Toyota Group.
In addition, the project aims to strengthen regional resilience by establishing a system capable of supplying electricity to Kanegasaki Town’s disaster-relief facilities during emergencies.
Moreover, this project has been selected for Agency for Natural Resources and Energy’s "Fiscal Year 2024 Subsidy for Projects Promoting Distributed Energy Resources and Supporting Regional Independent Grid Development Aimed at Expanding Renewable Energy Adoption."
Looking ahead, PowerX remains dedicated to supporting corporate decarbonization initiatives and bolstering community resilience through domestically produced battery energy storage systems.
